Medieval Universities

During my 1st semester in TESL program,we took the subject called 'History of Education'. I have to present about Medieval Universities.

So, what is Medieval Universities?
Medieval University is an institution of higher learning which was established during Middle Ages period

University is started from the students' and teachers' associations called Universitas. From the associations, it evolves and becomes university.


What is the factors contribute to the growth of universities at that time?

Ø The economic condition has improved.

Ø Political is more stable.

Ø Greater contacts with Byzantine and Arab scholars.

Ø Desire for learning and the demand for professional training


Rediscovery of the classics

Ø Rediscovered the works of Aristotle, Euclid, Ptolemy, Galen, and Hippocrates through Byzantine and Arab scholars.

Professional schools

Ø Offered professional studies in law, medicine, and theology.

Here is one of the example of medieval university:

University of Oxford

-Establish unknown but the teaching process existed since 1096.

-this university rapidly develop as in 1167, Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris

-about 1200, this university become important to the community.

-most of the subject is taken from Roman world.
